Many gauge theories display a transition at finite temperature where both their confinement and chiral properties change: while at low temperatures they are confining and chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken, at high temperatures confinement is lost and chiral symmetry is restored. Deconfinement and chiral-symmetry restoration in gauge theories on the lattice are accompanied by the localisation of the low-lying Dirac eigenmodes. The close connection between these three phenomena seems rather general, and its investigation may lead to a better understanding of gauge theories at finite temperature.
The purpose of this work is to study localisation of Dirac modes in the Z_2 lattice pure gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions, the simplest possible gauge theory on the lattice, to find out whether the connection between deconfinement and localisation persists even in such a simplified setting. The work consists in performing a numerical simulation of the model, diagonalising the staggered Dirac operator on the generated configurations, and studying the localisation properties of the eigenvectors and the correlations among the corresponding eigenvalues.
